But here’s what no one told me: Passive income is possible, but it isn’t passive in the beginning—and sometimes it’s not even all that passive later.
In this post, I’ll break down the real story behind passive income for moms. I’ll walk you through my own journey—what worked, what flopped, what surprised me, and how I built something that continues to earn even on my busiest mom days.
Whether you’re just exploring this world or knee-deep in building your first product, this post will give you clarity, encouragement, and a clear view of what passive income really looks like.

What Everyone Says vs Reality
You’ve probably seen this everywhere:
“Set it and forget it!”
“Make thousands a month in your sleep!”
“Automate your income with one simple trick!”
Here’s the truth:
Yes, passive income can be automated—but only after a lot of upfront work.
Yes, you can make money while you sleep—but it takes time to build the systems that allow that.
No, there’s no one simple trick.
For moms especially, time is our most limited resource. And that’s why it’s crucial to choose your passive income path wisely.
My First Passive Income Try
My first attempt at passive income was…well, let’s just say ambitious.
I had read about affiliate marketing, so I signed up for a few programs on, created a basic blog, and started posting product links.
I expected money to roll in. It didn’t.
Why? Because:
I didn’t have traffic
I wasn’t solving real problems
I didn’t build trust with my audience
Then I tried selling a printable planner through that I designed in Canva. It sold one copy—because I shared it in a Facebook group.
That was my first real $5 online. And it lit a fire in me.
What Worked and Didn’t
Let’s get specific. Here’s what didn’t work—and what eventually did:
Didn’t Work:
Promoting random affiliate products with no context
Making a course before I had an audience
Creating too many printables without a niche
Worked:
Creating a lead magnet + email list using Podia (later integrated with ConvertKit)
Designing one great product: a printable productivity planner for moms
Writing helpful blog content that linked to my Gumroad product
Joining affiliate programs for tools I personally used (Canva, planner printables, blogging tools)
These small wins built momentum.
How I Built Ongoing Income
Once I realized what was working, I doubled down on it. Here’s the system I used:
Chose a focused niche: Productivity for busy moms
Built a basic blog: I wrote SEO-friendly posts on time management, mom hacks, and digital tools
Created a digital product: A printable planner with templates for meal planning, routines, and goal-setting
Set up an email funnel: I offered a free mini-planner in exchange for emails via Podia
Promoted affiliate products: I included links to my favorite tools, like Canva and ClickBank programs
Repurposed content: Blog post > email > Pinterest graphic > checklist printable
It wasn’t flashy. But it worked.
Over time, I created:
Two more printable planners
A mini eBook on productivity
A
My income started trickling in: $30 one week, $75 another, then $200…
The Real Work
Let’s be clear: Passive income is not set and forget—it’s more like build and maintain.
Here’s what the real work looks like:
Creating valuable content: This is the most time-consuming part.
Answering customer emails: Even digital products need support.
Updating affiliate links: Programs and policies change.
Refreshing old blog posts: Keeps your content relevant.
Testing and tweaking funnels: Optimization never ends.
You also have to fight mom guilt, distractions, and comparison traps.
But when you receive a $9 sale notification while feeding your baby, or a $75 commission while grocery shopping—it’s all worth it.
Is It Worth It?
Short answer? Yes—with the right expectations.
Passive income can:
Give you flexibility to work in pockets of time
Offer income without 1:1 client work
Grow while you’re doing other things (like being a mom!)
But it won’t:
Make you rich overnight
Replace income immediately
Require zero effort
If you’re willing to play the long game and build slowly, the rewards come. And they last.
Putting It All Together
If I had to start over today, here’s exactly what I’d do:
